The 2023 No. 1 overall pick spent his summer training, but in an unconventional way. For 10 days, Wembanyama consulted monks at a Shaolin temple in China, studying medicine and Shaolin Kung Fu. After his trip, Wemby linked up with one of the most mentally tough players in NBA history, Kevin Garnett. Through the first two weeks of the NBA regular season, it looks like the San Antonio Spurs phenom is playing with a different mindset.
In six games this season, Wemby is averaging 26.7 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 4.7 blocks. Most notably, he nearly totaled a triple-double in his second game, registering 29 points, 11 rebounds, and nine blocks. Everyone knows the Frenchman is a shot-blocking machine, but his statlines still seem unfathomable. He’s always possessed the physical skills to be a superstar, but added wisdom could unlock another level to his game.
No LeBron? No Luka? No problem. To start the season, the Lakers have yet to see LeBron James take the court and Luka Dončić has missed four games, freeing up more shots for Reaves. While the 27-year-old’s usage has increased, his production is less about the absence of his teammates and more about a clear leap he’s made.
The former undrafted free agent’s skills have matured year-over-year since he signed with the Lakers in 2021 and in his first seven starts of the new season he looks like a certified All-Star, not just a “third option.” In back-to-back games, he dropped 51 points and 41 points, but he’s also orchestrating the offense at a high level, dishing out 16 assists in a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. It’ll be interesting to see if Reaves can keep his hot streak going further into the season.
Last season, Markkanen was hampered by injury, limiting him to 47 games. Now, fully healthy, the talented wing looks refreshed and already in mid-season form. The 28-year-old forward is off to a blistering start, averaging 31.1 points and 7 rebounds per game, serving as the focal point of the Jazz offense. Recently, the Finnish forward posted a new career-high in points, dropping a fifty-piece on the Phoenix Suns. Markkanen’s 51-point game is the eighth-most points scored by a member of the Utah Jazz in a single game, joining an elite list of Jazz legends, like Hall of Famer Pete Maravich.
